Bass Harbor Head Light is a lighthouse in Bass Harbor on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County , Maine , USA .

The cylindrical brick tower was built in 1858 and is 32  feet , approximately 9.75  meters , high. It stands on an approximately 7.25-meter-high granite - Cliff , characterized his beacon is at a height of 56 feet, about 17 meters above the waterline.

On September 1, 1858, the tower began its service. Then, he had a Fresnel lens V. order and a continuous red light emitting lamp ( identifier F. R ). The changeover to automatic operation did not take place until 1974. In 1902 the 5th order Fresnel lens was exchanged for a 4th order lens, manufactured by Henry-Lepaute in Paris. His identification nowadays is Ubr. R 4s .

Some of the outbuildings erected in the following years, such as a bell tower for the bell serving as a fog signal, were demolished again and give the complex its colonial appearance.

The lighthouse keeper's house is still inhabited today by members of the US Coast Guard . Its location above the granite cliffs of Bass Harbor Head makes it one of the most photographed buildings in New England . The Bass Harbor Head Light is part of Acadia National Park and was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District on January 21, 1988 .
