history

Carlo Baroncini, a cousin of the Bassetti family, opened a shop in Milan in 1830 with tablecloths, linen fabrics, handkerchiefs and napkins. In 1840 a hand weaving mill was opened in Rescaldina and it expanded.

Giovanni Bassetti, Baroncini's cousin, joined the company in 1864 at the age of 13 after completing a commercial apprenticeship. He took over the company in 1880 for 119,300 lire . In 1893 he was shipwrecked on a business trip in the Strait of Messina, fell ill and died. His wife, Rosa Piantanida, took over the management of the company. In the following years she enabled her children to train in the northern French city of Roubaix , a textile center. Looms were imported into Italy in order to increase production on the one hand and to reduce production costs on the other.

In 1914 the children Ermete, Felice and Giovanni founded the Giovanni Bassetti company . In order to be able to process linen and cotton better, work was carried out on the development of an artificial humid climate. The finishing plant in Trezzo sull'Adda was bought to bleach bales of linen in the sun . In the following years the company expanded further and acquired plants in Biassono and Revello . In 1922 Bassetti became the legal precursor of a stock corporation (Società anonima).

With the help of French experts, the Manifattura Lombarda Lino e Canapà plant in Origgio was opened.

In 1930 the eldest brother Giannino Bassetti, together with his two brothers Ermete and Felize, built a sales network with depots, warehouses and sales areas in Italy. In 1950, ready-made and packaged bed linen sets came onto the market for the first time. In the mid-1950s, Bassetti was one of the first brands to invest in advertising.

During the economic miracle of the 1960s, Bassetti expanded to France, Spain, Austria, Germany and England. In those years Bassetti became the most famous Italian textile company and had over 2,400 employees and 16 branches in various Italian cities. In the seventies, Bassetti expanded rapidly by merging with other companies in the textile industry. In 1980 Giannino Bassetti died and the sons Piero and Sandro Gian continued to run the company.

At the same time, the Bassetti Group was forced to sell some of the parts of the company due to a financial crisis. This included u. a. the hemp and linen mill and the cotton mill in Conegliano, Magnolia and Mascioni. In 1985 Bassetti joined the Zucchigroup. The merger of the two Italian companies to form the Zucchigroup was completed in 2006.
