Batemans Marine Park

The Batemans Marine Park is about 850 km² and extends from Murramarang Beach near Bawley Point in the north to Wallaga Lake in the south along the east coast within the three-mile zone of New South Wales in Australia . The marine reserve also includes the wetlands, streams, rivers and lakes, except for Nargal Lake , as far as the tidal range covers them.

The park is named after Nathaniel Bateman, a ship's officer who served on the Endeavor . James Cook named a bay Batemans Bay after him on April 22, 1770 . The marine reserve was proclaimed in April 2006.

Marine fauna and flora

The waters of the park are home to dolphins , sea ​​turtles , invertebrates , seaweed and fish such as sea ​​dragons , the Eastern Blue Devil Fish ( Paraplesiops bleekeri ), which is endemic to Australia , the wrasse Anampses elegans , the sand tiger shark and the Eastern Australian sawshark (a representative of the saw sharks ). Numerous whales like humpback , southern right whale , pilot whale and killer whale can be spotted in the marine reserve in the months of September to November each year.

Within the marine park is the Montague Island Nature Reserve with the Montague Island , which is of great cultural importance for the Aborigines . About 40,000 seabirds breed on this island, including 3 types of shearwater , terns , herring head gulls and between 8,000 and 12,000 little penguins . Sand tiger sharks and East Australian saw sharks swim around Montague Island in the south and Tollgate Islands in the north of the park .

In the marine park, people looking for relaxation fish, swim, surf, dive and do water sports with boats.

Commercial use in the park is restricted; Fishing with nets and long lines and dredging is prohibited.
