Kolbermoor cotton mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kolbermoor cotton spinning mill was an industrial company in Kolbermoor in Bavaria . Inspired by the idea of using the great hydropower of the Mangfall , the wealth of gateways in this city and the cheap train ( Mangfalltalbahn ) and transport connections, the company was founded as a stock corporation through the efforts of Theodor von Haßler .

Company history

Share over 1000 marks in the Kolbermoor cotton mill on December 28, 1920

Before the construction of the cotton mill , the Mangfall had to be straightened over a length of 2.7 km, an equally long works sewer had to be built and the Mangfall wilderness had to be cleared and leveled. Construction of the factory began in March 1861. At the same time, six residential buildings, two bridges and a connecting road from the main road to the Kolbermoor train station were built between Mangfall and the canal. On January 2, 1863, operations with 11,000 spindles began in the six-story main building. A year later, 41,000 spindles were working to manufacture yarn. On November 26, 1898, the spinning mill was destroyed within a few hours. At 8:30 in the morning, fire broke out on the fourth floor of the main building. The cause was never completely cleared up. With the quantities of flammable substances present, the fire spread quickly, so that all attempts to nip it in the bud were unsuccessful. Rescuing the six-story main building was out of the question.

Despite the fire and enormous financial burdens, the spinning mill decided to rebuild, which was completed in 1899. The restart was celebrated with a big party for the workers on August 18, 1900. Instead of the six-story building, the spinning mill management opted for two buildings with three floors each on both sides of the works canal. With this decision, the aim was to keep production in the event of another fire. The new spinning mill was built in 1899 with the east wing and in 1908 with the west wing. The cotton mill continued to work and produce until 1993.

Renovation and restructuring of the former cotton mill

From 1993 to 2006 the entire site lay fallow and was only used by individual smaller companies. In 2006 an investor took over the entire site and began the successful renovation of the new spinning mill. The industrial monument was renovated between 2008 and 2011; Upon completion, it will provide 12,000 m² of residential and office space as well as an underground car park with 95 parking spaces. The former huge spinning mill building now houses 42 modern loft apartments on the south and west sides of the building as well as approx. 5000 m² of office space. The entire basement of the spinning mill serves as an underground car park. In the upper floors, the essential historical components such as cap ceilings, cast and concrete pillars, and old exterior masonry were largely preserved. The Academy of Fine Arts has been located there since 2014 at the Alte Spinnerei .
