Johannes Konrad Theodor Haßler , knight of Haßler since 1898 , (born July 3, 1828 in Ulm , † February 28, 1901 in Augsburg ) was a German engineer, company manager and industrial interest representative. For many years he was chairman of the Central Association of German Industrialists .

Life

His father was the philologist Konrad Dietrich Haßler . At the age of sixteen, Haßler began an industrial apprenticeship at Otto Autenrieth in Ulm. From 1847 he worked as a trainee at the Keßler machine factory in Karlsruhe . In 1848 he was a member of a volunteer corps. In Karlsruhe he also attended the mechanical-technical department of the Polytechnic until 1849 . From 1850 he was an engineer at the Reichenbacher Maschinenfabrik in Augsburg (later the MAN plant ). From 1857 he worked for Ludwig August Riedinger and, as an engineer, was responsible for the construction and technical equipment of cotton mills in various German cities. Haßler was the main initiator of the establishment of the Kolbermoor cotton spinning mill in 1859/60 . After a period of study in England, he also took over the technical management of the company. In 1868 he became general director of the cotton mill at Stadtbach in Augsburg. At the time, it was the largest company of its kind in Germany. He led the company until 1889. From 1881 he was also a member of the MAN Board of Directors and from 1885 on the Supervisory Board.

He was also active in various technical associations and industrial interest groups. For many years he was chairman of the Technical Association of Augsburg and reorganized it. He was also a founding member of the Bavarian steam boiler revision association. He participated in the labor protection legislation and the German patent law.

In terms of economic policy, he was on the side of the representatives of protective tariffs . In 1870 he became a committee member of the Association of South German Cotton Manufacturers. Later he was president of the organization. In 1875, Haßler was involved in founding the Central Association of German Industrialists. From 1880 he was President of the CDI. With a brief interruption, he kept the post until shortly before his death.

In general politics, Haßler was initially a supporter of Otto von Bismarck . In 1898 he played a key role in an industrialist rally to expand the German fleet. This preceded the founding of the German fleet association . Since 1896 he was a member of the Imperial Council of the Crown of Bavaria . In 1898 he was accepted as a knight of Haßbach in the personal nobility of the Kingdom of Bavaria .
