The Bay du Nord River is an approximately 68 km long river in the south of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The origin of the Bay du Nord River is a 200 m high nameless lake in the Middle Ridge Wildlife Reserve . The Bay du Nord River flows south through a landscape rich in lakes. There are several smaller lakes and river widenings as well as rapids along the course of the river. The Bay du Nord River flows through Medonnegonix Lake and finally flows into North Bay , a small bay in the north of Fortune Bay on the south coast of Newfoundland. At the mouth of the river is the abandoned settlement of Bay du Nord . Pool's Cove is 3 km from the estuary on the west bank of the bay .
Hydrology
The Bay du Nord River drains an area of about 1180 km². The mean discharge 5.3 km above the mouth is 40 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges occur in April and May with an average of 68.2 and 55.8 m³ / s, respectively.
Fish fauna
Atlantic salmon and brook trout are found in the Bay du Nord River system , both in anadromous and non-anadromous forms.
Protection status
A total of 75 km long stretch of river, which leads from Rainy Lake via Kaegudeck Lake , Jubilee Lake , Koskaecodde Lake to Medonnegonix Lake and ends over the lower reaches of the Bay du Nord River at the sea, was designated 2006 as Canadian Heritage River . The Bay du Nord Heritage River Corridor covers an area of 997 km², of which 96 percent (960 km²) is within the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve and the Middle Ridge Wildlife Reserve . The river and lake system is ideal for canoe tours lasting several days.
