The Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve is a nature reserve in the central southeast of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was provisionally established in 1986. In 1990 the protected area received its current status. The main purpose of establishing the reserve is to protect the Canadian forest caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou ), which is the largest island population in the area. The area offers canoeing and fishing waters for those seeking relaxation . There is the possibility of wild camping, bird and animal watching and landscape photography. Official permission is required for all activities in the reserve. The use of snowmobiles in the protected area is not permitted between December 15 and March 15 .

The protected area covers an area of ​​2895 km². It is drained to the north via the Terra Nova River and Northwest River , to the east via the Pipers Hole River to Placentia Bay and to the south via the Bay du Nord River , North West Brook , North East Brook , Long Harbor River and other rivers. In the south, the reserve extends up to 7.5 km to the south coast of the island. There are numerous lakes in the reserve, including Medonnegonix Lake , Koskaecodde Lake , Jubilee Lake , Kaegudeck Lake , Eastern Meelpaeg and Meta Pond . The highest peaks are Mount Sylvester in the northwest with 376  m and The Tolt in the southeast with 310  m . In the northwest, the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve borders the Middle Ridge Wildlife Reserve .

The Middle Ridge caribou herd , which consists of 15,000 animals, lives in the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve and adjacent areas. The sanctuary forms the largest habitat of the Canada goose on Newfoundland.
