The Terra Nova River is a 140 km long river in the central north of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The Terra Nova River has its headwaters in the Middle Ridge Wildlife Reserve at an altitude of about 210 m . Initially, it flows about 40 km in a north-northeast direction, passing through the two lakes Nanedock Lake and Dog Pond . The river then turns east for the next 40 kilometers. It flows through Lake St. John and Mollyguajeck Lake . In the lower 60 kilometers, the Terra Nova River flows northeast, passing through Terra Nova Lake . Finally, the Terra Nova River flows south of the village of Glovertown into the Middle Arm , a bay that opens to Bonavista Bay , on the north coast of Newfoundland. The Trans-Canada Highway crosses the river 4.8 km above the mouth . The Terra Nova National Park is located southeast of the lower reaches .
Hydrology
The Terra Nova River drains an area of 2000 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 50.3 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges occur in April and May with an average of 112 and 82.2 m³ / s, respectively.
Wildlife
The Atlantic salmon is found in the river. Its existence in the river system is considered "not endangered". In addition, probably following other types of fish: speckled trout , lake trout , three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , Arctic Norway , American eel and the sea lamprey . Other typical aquatic inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat and North American otter, as well as Lithobates clamitans , a species of frog introduced on the island of Newfoundland.
