The Pipers Hole River is an approximately 54 km long river in the central east of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Pipers Hole River rises in a lake area east of the Meta Pond at an altitude of 200  m . From there it flows more than 20 km east to Whitehead Pond . The upper course has numerous river widenings. The course of the river is within the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve up to about 2 km above Whitehead Pond . Below Whitehead Pond, at river kilometer 24, a left tributary that drains a lake area consisting of Norsemans Pond , Island Pond West and Middle Pond flows into the Pipers Hole River. This turns to the southeast on its last kilometers. It finally flows into a 10 km deep, narrow bay at the head of Placentia Bay . The Route 210 , by the Trans-Canada Highway to the Burin Peninsula leads, crosses the Pipers Hole River one kilometer above its mouth. Above the Route 210 bridge, the Pipers Hole River Provincial Park was located on the river until its dissolution in 1995 .

Hydrology

The Pipers Hole River drains an area of ​​approximately 807 km². The mean discharge 4 km above the mouth is 25.3 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharge occurs at the water level usually in April with an average of 51.6 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

The salmon stock in the Piper Hole River system is considered "threatened".
