Beat Wismer (2006)

Beat Wismer (born April 23, 1953 in Ruswil ) is a Swiss art historian . From 1985 to 2007 he was director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau and from March 1, 2007 to the end of September 2017, director general of the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf .

Life

Wismer studied art history from 1973 to 1980 at the University of Basel with the minor subjects political philosophy and folklore . He graduated with a licentiate with the evaluation summa cum laude from. In 1977 he became assistant at the Archive for Swiss Art History in Basel . In 1981 he was a research assistant at the Kunstmuseum Luzern with Martin Kunz , he also assisted Stanislaus von Moos at the chair for modern and contemporary art at the University of Zurich . 1983/84 lectureships at the University of Zurich followed.

Wismer curated numerous exhibitions and publications on modern and contemporary art as well as Swiss art, for example Equilibre - balance, equivalence and harmony in the art of the 20th century 1993, cloud images. From William Turner to Gerhard Richter 2005 and Per Kirkeby. Crystal. Reflections, Relationships, and References in 2006.

He took part in various symposiums and lectures at home and abroad and was a member of numerous juries . Since 1983 Wismer has been and is a member of various commissions, foundations and associations, including the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art and the Swiss Werkbund . Until 2001 he was a member of the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia .

Wismer retired on October 1, 2017. His successor as General Director of the Museum Kunstpalast Foundation will be Felix Krämer .

Beat Wismer is married and has two daughters (* 1981 and 1984). Today he lives in Düsseldorf and Aarau .
