Beatrice Lorenzin (born October 14, 1971 in Rome ) is an Italian politician ( FI , PdL , NCD , PD ). She has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2008 and was Minister of Health from 2013 to 2018.

Life

Lorenzin's father came from Istria ; he came to Rome as a refugee in 1947, where he married a Florentine woman. Beatrice Lorenzin completed a humanistic high school and then worked as a journalist for a local newspaper.

In 1996 she joined Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party and became a district councilor in Rome the following year, and in 2001 a councilor. From 2004 to 2006 she worked as the head of the technical secretariat for a State Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, Paolo Bonaiuti . In 2005 she became the party coordinator of Forza Italia in the Lazio region , and in 2006 the national party coordinator for youth work. In April 2008, Lorenzin became a member of the Camera dei deputati for the center-right party Il Popolo della Libertà (PdL), which emerged from Forza Italia . In the Letta cabinet (“Grand Coalition” made up of Partito Democratico , PdL and Scelta Civica ) she was Minister of Health from April 28, 2013.

When Silvio Berlusconi and his party left the government, Lorenzin founded the Nuovo Centrodestra (NCD) party in November 2013 with the then Interior Minister Angelino Alfano and a number of other PdL ministers and deputies , which continued the coalition. She also retained the post of Minister of Health in the Renzi (2014–16) and Gentiloni (until June 1, 2018) cabinets . Your campaign to increase the birth rate received a lot of criticism in 2016, including from Prime Minister Renzi. In March 2017, the NCD transformed into the Alternativa Popolare (AP) party .

In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2018 , Lorenzin was the top candidate on the Civica Popolare list . This consisted of small middle-class center parties (AP, Centristi per l'Europa , Italia dei Valori , Unione per il Trentino ) who wanted to continue the center-left coalition under Matteo Renzi , and received 0.5% of the votes. It was only thanks to an agreement with Renzi's Partito Democratico (PD) that Lorenzin won the direct mandate in the constituency of Emilia-Romagna 9 ( Modena ). She then sat in the "mixed group" of non-attached MPs. In September 2019, Lorenzin left the AP and joined the PD.

Lorenzin became the mother of twins in 2015 at the age of 43.
