The Unione per il Trentino ( UpT ; German: Union for the Trentino ) is a party of autonomist Christian Democrats that is active in the northern Italian province of Trento . Its most prominent representative is the former governor of Trentino, Lorenzo Dellai .

Emergence

Lorenzo Dellai, founder and leader of UpT

In 2007, the two largest parties of the Italian center-left, the Democratici di Sinistra (DS, "Left Democrats") and the Christian- social Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita , merged to form the Partito Democratico (PD).

In Trentino, however, numerous supporters of the Margherita spoke out against the merger with the left-wing democrats. At the instigation of the long-time governor Dellai, they founded the Union for Trentino in June 2008. The UpT logo shows a daisy to commemorate the previous party.

Regional level

In the state elections on November 9, 2008, the party received 17.9% of the vote and 7 of the 35 seats in the state parliament. This immediately made it the second strongest force behind the Partito Democratico in the Trentino state parliament . It was also able to unite the votes of numerous voters of the Unione di Centro (UDC) because it was not allowed to vote for formal reasons. Dellai was confirmed in the office of governor, which he held until his move to the national level in late 2012.

In the 2013 elections , the UpT lost significant votes. It only achieved 13.3% and five seats in the state parliament. This put it in third place behind PD and PATT . Then she was represented as a junior partner in the government of Governor Ugo Rossi (PATT). In the state elections in 2018 , the UpT entered the center-left alliance with PD and Futura 2018 under the leadership of Giorgio Tonini . The party fell to 3.98% of the vote and one seat in the provincial parliament.

National level

In 2009, Dellai was a founding member of the Alleanza per l'Italia (ApI) alongside Francesco Rutelli and Bruno Tabacci , which positioned itself at the national level between the PD and the center-right block (and also linked to La Margherita in terms of content and symbolism).

In the Italian parliamentary elections in 2013 , Dellai was elected to the Italian House of Representatives for the Scelta Civica bourgeois list initiated by Mario Monti (which was above average in Trentino-Alto Adige with 13.1%) . The following year, however, he moved to the small Christian-social party Democrazia Solidale (Demo.S), which was involved in Matteo Renzi's center-left coalition. In the 2018 parliamentary elections , the UpT took part in the Civica Popolare list , which united middle-class middle parties (including Alternativa Popolare ) who sought a center-left coalition with Matteo Renzi's PD. This came to a total of 0.5% of the votes (1.3% in Trentino-Alto Adige), which means that the UpT did not receive a seat in parliament.
