The Beccari-Zwergohreule ( Otus beccarii ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl .

description

The little owl reaches a length of about 23 centimeters. The dark morph is banded blackish and white almost everywhere, especially dense on the brown upper side. The brownish underside is as good as without shaft lines. The red morph is generally yellowish and reddish brown with fine scribbles on the light yellowish brown upper side and white banding on the reddish brown lower side. The eyes are yellow, the feather ears of medium length, the beak is dark yellowish. The legs are feathered almost to the base of the dirty yellowish toes, the claws are dark horn-colored.

The allopatrisch occurring Moluccan scops owl ( Otus magicus ) is clearly dashed up and down.

Way of life

It inhabits dense forests and other woodland, including near settlements. The diet consists mainly of insects and spiders, occasionally small vertebrates are preyed on. The voice consists of harsh, crow-like croaking calls.

distribution

The Beccari scops owl is endemic to the island of Biak off western New Guinea . Most of the forest there has been cleared, which is why the species is classified as critically endangered by BirdLife International .
