Becker Marine Systems is a German manufacturer of ship and marine technology based in Hamburg . The company develops and manufactures maneuvering and energy-saving systems for ships as well as LNG hybrid drives.
history
Willi Becker founded the company in 1946 in Hamburg. With the Becker rudder , he developed a new type of rowing technique, especially for inland vessels. Further developments followed.
In 1998 the ship supplier Hatlapa acquired a stake in Becker. At the turn of the millennium, Dirk Lehmann joined Becker as a managing partner as part of a succession plan for Willi Becker. Since then, the company's turnover has increased from around EUR 25 million to around EUR 100 million (as of 2009).
Market position
The economist Christoph Müller , professor at the University of St. Gallen , included Becker as a hidden champion in his list of market leaders in 2018, which was drawn up together with Wirtschaftswoche . Becker Marine Systems is the world's leading supplier of high-performance oars in the maritime sector
Foreign branches
Becker has subsidiaries in the People's Republic of China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Norway and the USA.
Innovations
Together with the Schramm Group, Becker developed the LNG hybrid barge , which is used in the Port of Hamburg to generate low-emission electricity for cruise ships . The electricity generated by means of LNG means that the on-board generators, which are fueled with heavy oil, are no longer required.
In cooperation with Wallenius Lines , Becker is currently working on a study to develop a sail drive for car transporters .
