Bective Abbey

Bective Abbey ( Irish Beigthigh , Mainistir Bheigthí ; Latin Beatitudo Dei ) is a former Cistercian abbey in County Meath in Ireland . It is 7.5 km from Trim towards Navan on the left bank of the River Boyne , on the western edge of the historic Pale .

history

The monastery was founded in 1147, before the Anglo-Norman invasion, as one of the first Cistercian monasteries in Ireland by the King of Meath Murchad Ua Maeil Sheachlainn (Anglis. Murchadha O'Melaghlin ) as a daughter monastery of Mellifont Abbey and thus belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . No visible remains of the first building in the 12th century have survived. Hugh de Lacy (Lord of Meath) was buried in the once important monastery in 1195 . The nave still has walled arcades from the late 13th century. In the 14th century, the complex was expanded as a fortress. In 1537 the monastery was abolished. The church soon lost its roof. As a result, the monastery, which had become a mansion around 1600, became a ruin when it changed hands several times.

The cloister

The buildings of the monastery are located around a small cloister and were not built until the late Middle Ages. There is a strong defense tower in the southwest corner. The monastery also has a second defense tower, a third may have been built over the crossing of the church. The monk wing in the east has unusually thick walls.
