Beep ( borrowed from the English beep ) describes an acoustic signal from a computer . The tones are generated by a system loudspeaker . The computer can output them even if the operating system has not yet loaded or is not responding.

BIOS beep

Beep signals are used by the BIOS for error detection. The number and length of the generated tones is an indication of the source of the error. The beep signal can also sound if the computer does not have a sound card.

Software beep

The beep signal can also be generated by computer programs using the ASCII control character Bell . It is used, for example, to make the user aware of the system in urgent cases.
