The Beguin-Klösterle consists of a former chapel , an immediately adjacent residential area and a small garden between the house and the old city wall behind it . The late Gothic former monastery chapel has a high plinth made of plastered quarry stone, on which a half-timbered floor with a half- hip gable was added after the city fire of 1717 .

Ten virgins lived here together under a superior without religious vows and devoted themselves to nursing the sick and supporting the poor. The Beguines , "virtuous children of the willing poor", received a donation from Katharina von Hohenstadt in 1376 as a financial basis. In the middle of the 15th century the community had joined the Franciscan Tertiary Sisters (3rd Order of St. Francis ). According to the building inscription on the chapel, the current building was erected in 1489 ("in vigilia bartho apl", the day before Apostle Bartholomew , i.e. 23 August 1489). Johannes Eseler - known as Hans von Amorbach - is believed to be the builder .

After the death of the last superior in 1570, the community dissolved due to a lack of offspring. The property came into private hands. The chapel was used for private prayer until the 19th century , later it was used as a barn. In 1929, the local history researcher Karl Tschamber from Buchen acquired the Klösterle and saved it from deterioration. The first renovation took place after the Second World War . In 1949 the city of Buchen bought the property. The building complex was renovated at the end of the 1990s and the garden was newly laid out.

Library of Judaism Foundation

The Library of Judaism is supported by a foundation of the same name, with the help of which the inventory can be continuously expanded. Several times a year the foundation organizes events on the diverse topics of Judaism. She also invites groups and individuals to work with the book collections in the library and has a special grant for this.

history

Sixty years after the November pogrom in 1938 , Pastor Herbert Duffner established the Library of Judaism Foundation on November 9, 1998. Thanks to the willingness of the city of Buchen to cooperate, it was based in the former local Beguinage. The founder contributed his extensive private library and an additional financial foundation. The foundation would like to arouse or intensify the interest in Judaism and its history as well as give suggestions for the Christian-Jewish conversation.
