Beijershamn is a former port and now a nature reserve on the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .

history

Beijershamn was founded in the middle of the 19th century as a project to build a port on the island's west coast facing the Kalmar Strait . Around 1850, plans for the port project began, as the port previously used Fröbygårda of silting was affected. After the establishment of a joint stock company, work on the construction of the port began on October 2, 1853. Completion was scheduled for October 1, 1855. A stone pier was built that extends two kilometers into the Kalmar Sound to the island of Gastholmen . However, the construction turned out to be technically complicated. There was a significant time and budget overrun. Port operations were not started until 1858, although the facility was not yet fully completed at that time.

However, the port quickly began to silt up. At the same time, the usability of the port of Fröbygårda has been improved again. Nevertheless, a regular steamship line could be set up in 1863 , which only existed until 1865. In 1867 the corporation was dissolved. The traffic in the port decreased significantly. The port facilities were no longer maintained. In an auction in 1871, the remains of the port, its facilities and boats were sold for only 25 ore .

The unused and economically pointless harbor developed into an important biotope , especially for birds , with its mixture of open water, reed belts, riverbank meadows and mixed forest .

Nature reserve

The area has officially been a nature reserve since August 11, 1943 and is now classified under IUCN Category IV (biotope / species protection area). 259 bird species have been counted in the Beijershamn nature reserve. The biodiversity of the butterflies is also remarkable . More than 650 species have been observed in Beijershamn.
