The total area of Beit Hanina is 16.3 m². Beit Hanina has around 40,000 inhabitants, of which around 1,170 are in Beit Hanina Al-Balad.

history

Originally a Canaanite village, whose name means either "the house of someone who deserves pity" or "camp", the people of Beit Hanina trace their roots to the Howeitat and other Bedouin tribes who immigrated from Egypt and the East Bank.

Originally, Beit Hanina was a purely Muslim village, but some Palestinian Christians moved to Beit Hanina as early as the 1950s. By 1961, it had an estimated population of 3,067, including 332 Christians. In 1967, most of Beit Hanina was annexed by the Israeli occupation authorities and came under the jurisdiction of the Israeli occupation community. The smaller part called Beit Hanina Al-Balad (the old village) or Beit Hanina a-Tahta was considered an area in the West Bank. This has led to a situation where some residents of Beit Hanina have a residence in Jerusalem while the others carry Palestinian ID cards.

Beit Hanina is a busy trading post with many shops and offices as well as a center for leisure, commercial, educational and health facilities for all of North Jerusalem, albeit compromised by the West Bank barrier.

In Beit Hanina there is the Catholic St. Jacob Church, which belongs to the parish of the Jerusalem Salvatorkirche .
