Siege of Wiener Neustadt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The siege of Wiener Neustadt (1486–1487) was an 18-month siege by the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus .

The city of Wiener Neustadt , founded strategically against Hungary , was a bulwark in the sparsely populated Steinfeld with the city fortifications of Wiener Neustadt .

After the successful siege of Vienna in 1485, Matthias Corvinus sent his troops under the leadership of Stephan Zápolya , Wilhelm Tettauer , Ladislaus Kanizsay, Jakob Székely and Stephan Báthory to Wiener Neustadt to keep his back clear.

In the first step, four siege towers were erected: at Matthias Corvinus's behest, the siege ring was later tightened, additional towers were erected and, ultimately, the surrounding areas were devastated.

Despite the exemplary defense, the city ultimately had to be handed over to Matthias Corvinus, because the need had become too great for the population. The occupiers could only be driven out after the death of Matthias Corvinus.
