The siege of al-Arish by French troops under Napoléon Bonaparte occurred during the Egyptian expedition and lasted from February 8 to 19, 1799. The city, defended by Ottoman troops and local fighters, fell after a siege of eleven days after a violent cannonade and several assault attempts . Al-Arish was the first Ottoman fortress to be conquered by the French during the Syrian campaign. The surviving defenders of the city were granted free retreat by Napoleon on the acceptance of the promise not to fight the French any more .
