Tongue coating

Visible deposits on the tongue mucosa are referred to as tongue coating (also known as "coated tongue") .

Tongue coating can have various causes:

  • poor oral hygiene
  • Accompanying symptom in general illnesses
  • lack of mechanical abrasion of the tongue
  • Infections of the lining of the tongue
  • Xerostomia (dry mouth)
  • Medication

Tongue scrapers and tongue brushes exist for the mechanical removal of tongue deposits.
