Tongue coating
Visible deposits on the tongue mucosa are referred to as tongue coating (also known as "coated tongue") .
Tongue coating can have various causes:
- poor oral hygiene
- Accompanying symptom in general illnesses
- lack of mechanical abrasion of the tongue
- Infections of the lining of the tongue
- Xerostomia (dry mouth)
- Medication
Tongue scrapers and tongue brushes exist for the mechanical removal of tongue deposits.
