The lingua plicata ( Latin : lingua 'tongue', plicare 'fold'; Synonyma : folded tongue, notched tongue, furrow tongue, lingua fissurata, lingua scrotalis, lingua dissecta, lingua cerebelliformis ) is an autosomal dominant inherited variant of the texture of the tongue surface, which is caused by an increased longitudinal and / or transverse wrinkling is characterized. The lingua plicata is a harmless standard variant that does not cause any functional impairment of the tongue . Occasionally, patients complain of burning tongues .

The lingua plicata mostly occurs in healthy people ( prevalence : 15%). In general, a lingua plicata does not manifest itself before the age of 4, the frequency of development increases steadily until the end of the second decade. It is rarely diagnosed in connection with Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (with simultaneous facial paralysis and granulomatous cheilitis ). It is also seen in many Down syndrome patients . It can appear as an oral manifestation in patients with psoriasis . The wrinkled tongue is sometimes a symptom of Cowden's syndrome and Sjogren's syndrome . In 10% of the cases the lingua plicata is associated with the lingua geographica . (The lingua plicata is a hereditary disease)

therapy

No treatment is necessary in healthy patients. If the furrows become infected due to food residues and bacteria or if bad breath occurs, regular cleaning with a tongue cleaner is recommended. Otherwise, the underlying disease is treated.
