Belgian waffles ( French gaufres , Dutch wafels ) are a well-known specialty in Belgium . These thick waffles with a deep pattern are served with a variety of ingredients.

A distinction is made between Brussels waffles and Liège waffles. Brussels waffles consist of a soft batter , while the Liège waffles can be described as thick, sugar-sweet and butter-drenched yeast dough . Pearl sugar is added to the batter for Liège waffles . Both types of waffles are usually consumed warm.

Side dishes of the Belgian waffle are typically strawberries , bananas , cream or hot chocolate. Often butter or syrup are also added.

Waffles in general have been around since the Middle Ages when they had a religious function. The Liège waffles date back to the 18th century. According to one story, her name comes from a prince from Liège. This prince hired a cook to prepare a cake. The cook mixed sugar into the dough and cut it into pieces of equal size. The smell of vanilla that came out of the baking drew the prince into the kitchen. The resulting waffles became his favorite dish.

The Brussels waffles did not emerge until the middle of the 19th century.
