Belkis Concepción

Belkis María Altagracia Concepción Hernández (born June 20, 1961 in Santo Domingo ) is a Dominican singer.

Concepción looked for the Santa Luisa de Marillac convent school and took piano lessons at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música . She later studied law at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña . She began her musical career at the age of twelve as a pianist in a group of classmates called Las Muchachas .

In 1976, she founded a new girls' music group of the same name, which performed at public events, private parties and also on television. With instrumentalists from Escuela Iris Del Valle , she founded another women's group in 1979, which appeared in Yaqui Núñez del Risco's television show and was named Chicas Del Can . Concepción toured with this group, which became known with songs such as La Media Maria , El Africano , El Higuerón and Comején , through the USA, Curacao, Aruba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Colombia.

An illness of Guillain-Barré-Syndrome ended her work with this orchestra in 1985. After her recovery she founded the women's orchestra Belkis Concepcion y su orquesta , with which she made her debut at the Maunaloa Night Club and Casino and toured as far as Africa, France, Spain and the Netherlands. After an extensive tour of the USA, she settled in Puerto Rico.

In 2004 Concepción returned to the Dominican Republic and there again founded a new women's orchestra. With a group of Dominican musicians from Barranquilla, she successfully took part in the Pasion Caribe show at the Colombian Country Club Del Caribe . 2013 she founded with Sanya Estévez , Mayi Vargas and Melissa Espinal the Las Nuevas Chicas .
