The AviaBellanca Aircraft Corporation (abbreviated Bellanca ) is an American manufacturer of light aircraft based in Alexandria , Minnesota .
The company was founded in 1927 by Giuseppe Bellanca under the name Bellanca Aircraft Company . In 1931 Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon made the first non-stop crossing of the Pacific Ocean in a "Bellanca J-300" called Miss Veedol . In 1936 a new record was set for the flight over the Atlantic with 13 hours in a "Bellanca Flash Racer Model 28-90". In 1970 Champion Aircraft Corporation was taken over . In 1983 the company changed its name to AviaBellanca Aircraft Corporation .
Bellanca is known for its typical braced high-decker cabin with tail wheel landing gear. The model series "Citabria" is approved for limited aerobatics ("Citabria" read backwards = "Airbatic" - aerobatics). In 2007, the American billionaire and aviation pioneer Steve Fossett had a fatal accident in a “Citabria Super Decathlon” .
