The Bellingham Bay is a bay in the Salish Sea in the State of Washington . It is separated from the Strait of Georgia to the west by the Lummi Peninsula , Portage Island and Lummi Island . It is bounded to the east by Bellingham , to the southeast by the Chuckanut Mountains and to the south by Samish Bay . The Nooksack River flows into the bay as does Whatcom Creek .

Bellingham Bay is named after Sir William Bellingham , who was the Royal Navy's warehousing controller at the time of the Vancouver Expedition's June 1792 visit . The first visit by Europeans occurred during the expedition of Francisco de Eliza in 1791 by the Spanish schooner Santa Saturnina under José María Narváez . Narváez named the bay Seno Gaston .

Events

The town of Bellingham hosts a running and walking marathon on Bellingham Bay. There are three “marathon” courses to choose from, a (real) marathon, a half-marathon, a 10 km and / or a 5 km run. The Bellingham Bay Marathon (BBM) is a qualifying run for the Boston Marathon . In addition, all BBM courses are certified by the USATF, the national association for such sports. The Bellingham Bay Marathon was founded in 2003 by the Bellingham Bay Swim Team. In addition, all entry fees go to charitable youth organizations in Whatcom County.

Rehabilitation of the bay

Pilot project

In 1996, federal, state, tribal, and local government officials came together to form the Bellingham Bay Demonstration Pilot Team . The mission of the pilot project was to develop a plan to clean up contamination, control sources of pollution and restore habitats on the bay. In addition, the land and water uses at the redevelopment sites around the bay were included. The pilot team is supported by the Department of Ecology and Port in Bellingham as the lead authority of the pilot project. The pilot team works out the future strategy for 12 priority locations around the bay. In early 2013, the Ecology Department also revised its sediment management standards to create a new framework for identifying and removing contaminated sediments.
