Chuckanut Mountains

The Chuckanut Mountains ("Chuckanut" is an Indian word for "long beach, far from a narrow entrance") or Chuckanuts are located in the north of the US state of Washington on the banks of the Salish Sea , just south of Bellingham . They are part of the cascade chain and as such the only place where the chain extends to the coast. The Chuckanuts are considered part of the Puget Lowland Forest ecoregion .

geography

The mountain range is home to Larrabee State Park , which was designated as the first state park in Washington in 1923 .

geology

The Chuckanut Mountains were formed by the folding of the Chuckanut Formation (which primarily consists of layers of 55 million year old sandstone , conglomerates, shale, and bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) and the younger Huntingdon Formation above (predominantly shale and sandstone) as well as formed from an exposed part of pre- Jurassic phyllites . The chuckanuts are widely known for the leaf fossils from the tertiary era.

In 1988 an outcrop of metamorphic phyllites, green cherts and milk quartz was unearthed on Blanchard Mountain by a construction company. The outcrop is unique because of its unusually large chunks of stilpnomelane .
