The ruins of Belltrees Peel

Belltrees Peel is the ruin of a medieval tower block on a peninsula in Castle Semple Loch in the Scottish county of Renfrewshire . Between 1547 and 1572, the unusually low tower with an irregular hexagonal floor plan was built on the site, which was still an island at the time. The remains of the building are now considered a Scheduled Monument .

The tower belonged to the Semple family and Sir James Semple of Belltrees lived there . He was together with the later King James VI. educated and worked in 1601 as the Scottish ambassador to France . The Semples Belltrees later used Peel as a refuge when they sailed on Castle Semple Loch.
