Belmore Park, with Central station and railway line

The Belmore Park is a public park on the southern edge of the city of Sydney , in Australia's New South Wales . It is adjacent to Sydney Central Railway Station and bordered by Hay Street, Eddy Avenue, Elizabeth Street and Pitt Street. The area used to be part of a crown land known as the Police Paddock (i.e., something like a police nest) . These included the police barracks, the cemetery on Devonshire Street, the Samaritan women's shelter, a poor house and a common land. The park opened in 1868 and was dedicated to Somerset Lowry-Corry, 4th Earl Belmore . Lowry-Corry was then Governor of New South Wales. In 1901 the area was used for the construction of Sydney Central Station . The excavation landed on the Allmend, which has made the site look completely different since then. In 1908 the “Royal Commission for the Improvement of the City of Sydney and Its Suburbs”, an expert commission of eleven people, was set up in Sydney. Norman Selfe , a member of this commission, suggested redesigning the park. That was done much later, but Selfe never lived to see it.

Because of its proximity to the city, and especially the main train station, the park is often used for events, markets and protests. For example, Henri L'Estrange tries to take off with a gas balloon without success . During the 2000 Summer Olympics, the park was one of the five zones where the games were publicly broadcast. In the late 1860s, Belmore Produce Markets and Paddy's Markets were built opposite each other. Today it is known as the " Haymarket ".

The park is a transport hub. In the eastern part, the railway line known as the " City Circle " comes above ground and then goes underground into the city. All Sydney city buses depart south on Eddy Avenue. There are also many local buses going to the eastern suburbs, e.g. B. to the University of New South Wales, and to Bondi . On the west side of the park there is a driveway to the entrance area of the main station. The reverse loop of the Metro Light Rail goes around the park. The main station can be reached via ramps on the east and west sides.
