Norman Selfe (born December 9, 1839 in Teddington (England), † October 15, 1911 in Sydney ) was an English-Australian engineer , marine technician and inventor . He is best known these days as the namesake of the Sydney suburb of Normanhurst, where his residence Gilligaloola still exists today, and as the winner of a competition from 1903 for the construction of a 'Sydney Harbor Bridge' (although this bridge was never built and only was 1924–32 according to plans by the Dorman Long company in the form known today ). Selfe designed precision machinery, refrigeration equipment, hydraulics and electrics, and plans for traffic in the city, as well as bridges, docks and ships. He was involved in the Royal Society of New South Wales , the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts ; the Australian Historical Society and the Central Federation League . As President of the Board of Technical Education , he campaigned, often controversially, for an independent, more practical and less elitist system of technical education. This should do much better justice to the needs of industrialization . In some areas, Selfe's achievements were not recognized until after his death.
