Steam locomotive boiler with Belpaire standing boiler

The Belpaire standing boiler is a special type of standing boiler for steam locomotives with an approximately rectangular cross-section and a flat ceiling. This protrudes on the sides over the cylindrical curvature of the boiler and can therefore often be recognized from the outside by the angular bumps on the side of the (standing) boiler in front of the driver's cab. The Belpaire standing boiler had more space to generate steam than the conventional standing boiler, which was adapted to the cylindrical shape of the long boiler. Furthermore, this design allows a clearer anchoring in which the ceiling studs are almost perpendicular to the wall everywhere. Wash hatches can also be attached to the upper longitudinal edges , which provide easy horizontal and vertical access for boiler inspection and cleaning.

It is named after the Belgian engineer Alfred Belpaire (1820–1903). Steam locomotives with Belpaire standing boilers were built in Europe and North America. Well-known examples of German locomotives with Belpaire standing boilers are the Prussian P 10 or the Prussian T 20 .
