The Beltz publishing group , based in Weinheim, is a German publisher that is active in the areas of children's and young people's books, education and training, continuing education, pedagogy and psychology. It was founded in 1841 by Julius Beltz in Langensalza , Thuringia, as a printing company , and a publishing business was added in 1868. Today the family company is independently managed in the 6th generation and employs over 300 people.
history
The company was founded in 1841, when the trained printer Julius Beltz opened a printing company in Langensalza , near Erfurt , in Thuringia . In 1868 Beltz took over the Adolph Büchting publishing house in Nordhausen . Since then, the company has been operating as the Julius Beltz publishing house, a publisher for textbooks with regional distribution. In 1903 Julius Beltz, the founder's grandson, took over the company from his mother Helene. In 1909, with the purchase of the magazine “Die Volksschule”, the development that Beltz turned into a school book publisher in the 1920s began. In 1932 the son Wilhelm Beltz joined the company as a partner. At that time, the publishing program comprised 16 magazines and well over a thousand books, full writings and reading books.
At the time of National Socialism , the Beltz Verlag behaved according to the latest research results and had come to terms with the Nazi state . For the study carried out in 2017/2018, more than 1,600 publications that appeared at Beltz between 1933 and 1945 were viewed. The evaluation showed that around 11 percent of the publications contained Nazi and anti-Semitic propaganda. In terms of content, these writings cover the entire spectrum of Nazi ideology. The investigation was commissioned by the publisher in August 2017, the year of the company's 175th anniversary.
In 1946, large parts of the printing works were requisitioned as reparations by the Soviet military administration . The publishing business collapsed. In 1949 the Beltz publishing family left their homeland as so-called zone refugees and settled in Weinheim near Heidelberg . Beltz Verlag was re-established there. The company and assets in Langensalza were expropriated due to the evacuation of the zoning - the printing works continued as "VEB Thomas Müntzer". In 1960 Beltz had re-established himself with his offset printing company and the educational publisher. Manfred Rübelmann joined the company and became a partner in 1963. The Beltz couple adopted him in 1970, and from then on he was personally liable partner. In the 1970s, psychology was added to the traditional mainstay of education - the science magazine “ Psychologie Heute ” was founded. The new children's and youth book program “ Beltz & Gelberg ” was also launched under the leadership of Hans Joachim Gelberg . In the 1980s Beltz took a stake in Juventa Verlag, took over Quadriga Verlag and launched the paperback program “Gulliver”.
The German reunification gave Beltz the opportunity to buy back the parent company in Bad Langensalza - from 1992 the company was completely renewed. A modern large bookbindery was built in two investment phases by 2003. Also in 2003, Joachim Rader took over the management from Manfred Beltz Rübelmann. After Rader's unexpected death, Marianne Rübelmann became managing director of Julius Beltz GmbH & Co. KG in autumn 2004. In 2012 the second printing service location in Hemsbach had to be abandoned. In 2015, the long-standing participation in Campus Verlag passed into ownership. The social, cultural and economic policy program now complements the portfolio of Beltz Verlag.
