The Belvederer Allee is 2500 meters long, with the exception of the right bend at the Falkenburg dead straight avenue in the southeast of the Thuringian city of Weimar . It consists of old horse chestnuts and linden trees of various ages. As one of the most famous streets in the city, it connects Weimar's center with the Belvedere Palace and Park and is a protected area as a monument .

course

Belvederer Allee begins on the southeast edge of Weimar's old town, where the end of Marienstraße flows into Belvederer Allee. The first building on the long avenue is a house built in 1920 with pinnacles, which today belongs to the Bauhaus University Weimar as “Belvederer Alle 1” and is used by the architecture faculty. The Liszt House Weimar , the former residence of the composer and pianist, which is now used as a museum, has stood directly opposite since 1798/99 . On the east side of Belvederer Allee, after the Liszthaus, the park on the Ilm follows a long stretch and is accompanied by a cycling and hiking trail . On the west side, on the other hand, there are several representative villa buildings from the time of the German Empire with a direct view of the countryside. On the east side, the park on the Ilm finally merges into the “Falkenburg” sports complex, which was laid out in 1910, and the large building of the former Hilton Hotel Weimar (since December 2007 Leonardo Hotel) sits enthroned across the street .

Shortly after the sports field, about halfway down Belvederer Allee, a through road branches off to Oberweimar to the east and Merketalstraße to the west towards “Sophien- und Hufeland-Klinikum” . A little later, Belvederer Allee touches the Ehringsdorf district . Here is on the west side of the avenue with the no. 58, in the Art Nouveau Built House High poplars , the former home of the architect Henry van de Velde . After Ehringsdorf it rises more and more, to reach the Eichenleite hill with the Belvedere Palace after about a kilometer . In addition to the palace with the “Rococo Museum” , the “Cavalier's Houses” used by the “Franz Liszt” University of Music and the “Orangery” , the Belvedere Music High School, subtly integrated into the wide palace gardens, is located on the hill . To the east of the grammar school there is a large car and bus parking lot, which touches Belvederer Allee. It then stretches along the castle grounds in a south-westerly direction, ending in front of the federal motorway 4 . Here it turns into the state road to Vollersroda .

Street event

Every year at the beginning of May on the steeply sloping Belvederer Allee there is a soap box race known far beyond the borders of Thuringia with several thousand spectators and more than 50 starters under the name “Spacekidheadcup” . The name as well as the trophy of the event was based on Yuri Gagarin's first flight into space in 1961. The first event of this kind was in 1991 and was brought into being by the “Bureau for Experimental Behavior” . The “Leibnizallee” was used as a race track for a long time , in order to still be able to offer enough space for the growing number of spectators, the soap box race then moved to Belvederer Allee in 2002. The “Spacekidheadcup” is organized by students from the Bauhaus University on a non-profit basis.
