Ben Sherman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ben Sherman (* 3. October 1925 as Arthur Bernard Sugarman in Brighton , † 1987 ) was an English fashion producer and founder of the eponymous British clothing company.

The person

Arthur Bernard Sugarman was born in Brighton in 1925, the son of an English trader. In 1946 Sugarman emigrated to the USA via Canada. He took American citizenship and changed his name to Ben Sherman. He married the daughter of a Californian clothing manufacturer and returned to his native Brighton, England. At the end of the 1950s he bought a bankrupt clothing manufacturer in the seaside resort of Brighton and founded the Ben Sherman company in 1963. In 1975 Sherman left the company to pursue his private life in Australia.

The mark

The brand was worn by well-known musicians (e.g. Paul Weller , Ray Davies of The Kinks ) and found its way into the Mod , Skinhead and Ultras subcultures. The Union Jack (flag of Great Britain) and its colors red, white and blue often play a role in the design, as does the symbol of the mods, the "target" (originally the symbol of the Royal Air Force ). Ben Sherman is best known for his button-down shirts with slim fit (narrow cut). In his portrayal of the outside world, Ben Sherman relies on identification with the flair of Great Britain. As a trademark, Ben Sherman has adopted the fact that collections are always photographed in an environment that is clearly British.

In 2015, textile group Oxford Industries announced that the brand had sold for £ 40.8 million. The buyers were the companies Ben Sherman UK Acquisition Limited and Ben Sherman US Acquisition LLC, behind which the US brand management group Marquee Brands stands.
