Bence Máté was born in Szeged as the eldest son of a family of four teachers. When Bence was two years old, the family moved to the edge of the village of Pusztaszer and built a house by the wetlands. From his bedroom, with a view of the reeds, Bence took his first bird photos. Bence Máté went to primary school in Pusztaszer, where both of his parents were teachers. Later, at the “Kiss Ferenc Forestry High School” he won third prize in 2000 and second prize in 2001 in the national nature conservation competition “Kitaibel Pál”, which he illustrated with his own pictures.

In 2000, Bence was named Hungary's “Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year”. He received this title five times between 2000 and 2004. In 2001 his picture "Susliks" was recommended in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition . In the following year 2002, his picture "Recycling" earned him the title of "BBC Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year". In 2002 he became a member of "NaturArt", the association of Hungarian wildlife photographers.

On October 1, 2003, at the age of 18, Bence started a business and began making a living from photo contests, lectures, articles, setting up exhibitions, and selling pictures. In November 2004 he switched from analog to digital photography.

In spring 2005 he experimented with the one-way mirror technology, which allowed him to photograph shy animals from close range without disturbing them. This technique soon became popular with photographers taking photos from hiding.

In 2005, Bence won the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year's Eric Hosking Award (for photographers ages 18-26).

He was invited to photograph wild animals in the “Pripyat National Park” in Belarus for the “National Geographic's Wild Wonders of Europe”. This book introduces 69 European wildlife photographers who photographed the natural heritage of 48 European countries.

In 2006, Bence started a wildlife photography tourism business. He renovated a farm and turned it into a scene for hideaway-based photography in Europe. In the same year he was named Hungarian “Animal Photographer of the Year” for the first time. He also won this title in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Tower blind, Costa Rica, 2009

Between November 2008 and April 2009, Bence set up hiding places in Costa Rica for wildlife photography. Between September 2009 and March 2010 he did similar work in Brazil, developing his skills in the planning and design of hiding places, experimenting with different materials and construction techniques. In 2010, his picture of leaf cutter ants entitled "Marvel of Ants" earned him the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Bence became the only photographer in the history of the competition to win the grand prize in the youth and adult categories.

In the same year Bence was made an honorary citizen of the village of Pusztaszer.

He designed bird and big game hiding spots for the “Zimanga Private Game Reserve” in South Africa, which started a company based on African photo hiding places as an alternative to classic safaris (“Zimanga Hides”).

Bence has been the ambassador for the Hungarian national parks since 2013.
