Bence Szabolcsi

Bence Szabolcsi [ ˈbɛntsɛ ˈsɒboltʃi ] (born August 2, 1899 in Budapest ; † January 21, 1973 there ) was a Hungarian musicologist .

Life

Szabolcsi studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest with Zoltán Kodály and philology at the university there. He later went to Leipzig , where he studied musicology with Hermann Abert and received his doctorate in 1923. In 1946 he received a professorship at the Franz Liszt Music Academy. He wrote works on Hungarian and general music history (including building blocks for a history of melody ), dealt with music ethnology and edited , among other things, the writings of Béla Bartók .

In 2001 the Bence Szabolcsi Prize (Szabolcsi Bence-díj) was awarded for the first time.
