Benderli Ali Pasha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benderli Ali Pascha (* 1770 in Bendery , today Transnistria ; † 1821 in Cyprus , then Ottoman Empire ) was only a few days (April 21-30, 1821) Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mahmud II.

With the beginning of the first uprisings on the Ottoman-ruled Morea , which should ultimately lead to the Greek Revolution , there were riots in the Ottoman Empire against the Greeks living there . Numerous Greeks were charged with treason and executed, including the Orthodox Patriarch Gregorios on April 21, 1821 . In the hope that he would act more vigorously against the rebels than his predecessor, Ali Pasha was appointed Grand Vizier by Mahmud II on the same day, but already exiled and executed on April 30, 1821.

In 1822 German newspapers speculated that Ali Pascha had come into office as part of the clientele policy of the seal keeper (nişancı) Mehmet Said Halet Efendi . He expected to be able to exert greater influence on the Sultan through Ali Pasha. After the new Grand Vizier had publicly declared that he would act completely independently in the exercise of his office and only accept instructions from the Sultan himself, Halet Efendi obtained his dismissal under the pretext of inability. He was the last Ottoman Grand Vizier executed on the direct orders of a Sultan.
