The Lite-On Technology Corporation ( Chinese  光 寶 科技 , Pinyin Guāng Bǎo Kē Jì ) is the leading company of a group of global electronics manufacturers with headquarters and headquarters in Taipei , Taiwan .

The company was best known for its optical drive manufacturing facility, which was established in 1995 and spun off from 1999 to 2014 as an independent subsidiary . The history of Lite-On goes back in part to the year 1975, to a company founded in Taipei to manufacture LEDs. The current group did not come into being until 2002 from the merger of a total of four Taiwanese hardware producers to form the largest Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) in Taiwan at the time. The company has had the rights to the Plextor brand name since 2010 .

The current group of companies was created in 2002 through the merger of Lite-On Electronics , GVC Corp. , the specialist in silicone rubber Silitek Corp. and Lite-On Technology Corp. It was agreed to use the name of the latter company. Lite-On Electronics Inc.

In 1989, the company founded Lite-On Electronics Inc., its first foreign subsidiary in Bangkok , Thailand . A year later, a subsidiary in Penang , Malaysia , with the same name , focused on the manufacture of switched-mode power supplies . One area in 1991 by buying a company from NPE established development and production site for power supplies in Ashington , Northumberland in the UK was further expanded. British production started in the same year under LITE-ON (npe) Ltd. ; in October 1993 the company name was changed to LITE-ON Ltd. shortened.

GVC Corporation

The GVC Corp. was a supplier of various components. Initially the focus was on analog modems , but GVC soon began producing cell phones and portable CD and MP3 players . Silitek and Silitech Technology Corp.

The Silitek Corp. formed a silicone rubber division in 1978 and began supplying the automotive industry in 1983. In 1990 she founded the subsidiary SILITEK Corporation Sendirian Berhad in Malaysia and began manufacturing buttons and components for mobile phones in 1993. Lite-On Technology Corp.

Founded in 1989, Lite-On Technology Corp. 110 million Taiwan dollars in the production of color screens with cathode ray tube (CRT). In 1992, arose with the Lite-On GmbH in Kiel also has a daughter in Germany and 1994 originated in the United States , the Lite-On Technology International Inc. in California .

Working with engineers from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in 1995 at Lite-On Technology Corp. In 2003, the optoelectronics subsidiary Lite-On IT relocated its production site to Guangzhou , China, and started producing DVD burners at the same time. The subsidiary's shares were already publicly traded in 2001, and from November 5, 2004, they were listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in addition to the shares of the parent company. In 2006 Lite-On IT took over the previously competing optical drive division of BenQ for the equivalent of 30 million euros. A little later, the 49 percent share of the joint venture Philips & BenQ Digital Storage Corporation formed by BenQ with Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV followed . Under the new name Philips Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation (PLDS), the joint venture took over the design, development, sales and marketing of the optical drives, while Lite-On IT took over the production. With the global decline in demand for optical drives, the company formed new areas. In addition to a supplier company for the automotive industry that has existed since 2006, the fields of bio-technology and medicine were also created in 2011, which among other things dealt with the development of devices for blood tests. The company entered the field of SSD technology under the name Plextor , to which it acquired the distribution and trademark rights in 2010. Nevertheless, there was a significant decline in business.

In addition to Lite-On IT , the subsidiary Silitech Technology was also listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2004 . Subsequently, the parent company had enough capital to buy shares in Lite-On Enclosure Inc. , and to expand its shares in Lite-On Automotive International Co., Ltd. to 100%. In addition, the company invested in DragonJet Corp. in 2005 . to technically strengthen their plastics division. In 2006 the group strengthened its power supply division by investing in Li Shin International Enterprise Corporation (LSE) and in 2007 was successful with its bid for Perlos Corporation , the leading manufacturer of housings for cell phones.

After a slump in profits in 2008, the group sold its display production, which had previously been the strongest sales area, to the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron Corporation for the equivalent of 196 million euros .

In 2014, Lite-On Technology Corp. decided to buy back all shares of Lite-On IT available in the open market and to merge their subsidiary back into the main company.
