history

Exchange trading in Taiwan began in the 1960s. After Taiwan's political objectives shifted from substituting imports to promoting exports, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was established as early as 1960. This prepared the establishment of the TSEC, which began trading with 18 companies in 1962. Until the early 1980s, however, trade was slow, with little international participation.

Due to Taiwan's successful development as an export country and the accompanying strengthening of the currency, capital flowed back from overseas Taiwanese to Taiwan, but international interest in the Taiwanese stock exchange also increased. The opening of the market began in 1983, and efficient computer-aided trading systems were introduced in 1986/87. The following years were marked by speculative exaggerations. In some cases, price manipulation and companies in close relationships with underground organizations were also held responsible for this.

It was not until the 1990s that the Taiwanese government sought, on the one hand, to regulate the market more closely and, on the other, to open it up to foreign investors. These have been allowed to operate in Taiwan since the end of 2000. In the 1990s, the Taiwanese government repeatedly intervened in the market with support purchases.
