Original Design Manufacturer

An Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is a company that undertakes large-scale contract manufacturing for other companies .

An ODM manufactures products commissioned by other companies, some of which have been developed in-house, which are ultimately sold under the customer's brand name. This procedure allows a customer of an ODM to offer branded products without the customer having to operate his own factory for this product. This type of production is particularly common in international trade. Western companies use them, for example, to manufacture their products in Asia more cheaply than in their own country. The desired concept is specified by the client, the ODM takes over the planning, construction and manufacture of the product, which is then sold under the client's brand name. In contrast, there is the Contract Manufacturer (CM), who only takes over the contract production.

Examples

The brand name is neither an indication of an in-house production nor of high quality, as the product offered under the brand name consists of the manufacture of this original design manufacturer. For example, Foxconn supplies ODM companies such as Acer , Apple , Dell , Hewlett Packard , Intel , Microsoft , Nintendo , Nokia , Sony and Toshiba . The partially competing companies obtain parts of their products from one and the same company.

ODMs are well established in notebook manufacturing. Around 90% of all notebooks produced come from ODMs. Well-known ODMs in this area are u. a. ECS , Quanta Computer , Compal , Clevo and Wistron . For example, Quanta manufactures notebooks for Acer, Apple, Dell, Hewlett Packard and some models for Toshiba.
