Benedek Elemér Vidos (born February 7, 1902 in Budapest , † March 18, 1987 in Nijmegen ) was a Dutch Romanist of Hungarian origin.

life and work

Vidos was born as "Benedek Elemér Wallerstein". In 1910 his father converted from the Jewish to the Catholic faith and changed his name to "Vidos". He himself later used the version "Benedictus Eleutherius" or "BE" for short as his first name.

Vidos studied French, Latin, Spanish and Italian in Budapest, then with Giulio Bertoni in Bologna and with Ernst Gamillscheg in Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1928 with the work Szóföldrajzi kutatások (Linguistic Geographical Studies) and was a grammar school teacher in Budapest. In 1932 he went to teach Italian and Spanish at the University of Nijmegen , where he was professor of Romance philology from 1946 to 1971.

Vidos' history of the Italian nautical vocabulary, which was converted into French in 1939, was recognized by Ernst Gamillscheg as a “really great achievement” ( Zeitschrift für Französ Sprache und Literatur 63, 1939, p. 86). His Handbook of Romance Linguistics (originally 1956) appeared in five languages, including German.
