Life

Giulio Bertoni was born in Modena as the son of Giuseppe and Adele Baroni. After finishing school in Modena and Turin , he studied literature at the University of Turin . During his studies he was strongly influenced by the poet Arturo Graf and especially by Rodolfo Renier, professor of literature at the University of Turin. After his exams in 1901, he enrolled for further studies at the University of Florence , where he studied with the philologist Pio Rajna and made contact with the literary critic Guido Mazzoni. From 1903 to 1904 he stayed in Paris and Berlin , where he met the most important representatives of Romance philology at the time, such as Paul Meyer , Jules Gilliéron , Adolf Tobler and Erich Auerbach . After returning to the University of Turin in 1905, he initially taught Romance philology, but in the same year he was appointed to the University of Friborg in Switzerland, where he initially taught as an associate professor and from 1909 was professor of Romance studies for many years . The time in Freiburg was very fruitful for him from an academic point of view: he published around 700 publications there, including books, journal articles and critical text editions.

In 1921 he first returned to the University of Turin and then finally settled in Rome from 1928, where he succeeded Cesare De Lollis , renowned literary scholar and committed supporter of contemporary Italian authors, as professor of Romance studies at the Sapienza . Since 1936 he was a member of the Accademia della Crusca . Since 1933 he was a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .
