Benedict Levi
Benedikt Samuel Levi (born October 14, 1806 in Worms ; died April 4, 1899 in Gießen ) was a German rabbi .
Life
Benedikt Levi was the son of the Worms rabbi and later Mainz chief rabbi Samuel Levi (1751-1813) and Sara Worms. He attended a cheder at the age of four and a Talmud Thorah school at the age of five. He received his religious education from Rabbis Gumpel Weismann, Ephraim Kastel and Löb Ellinger. On his deathbed, the father appointed Benedict rabbi. After another training phase at the Israelite Bürgerschule Michael Creizenachs in Mainz , he studied from 1824 philosophy at the University of Würzburg and visited at the same time the local yeshiva of Abraham Bing . After two years he continued his studies at the University of Giessen , where he received his doctorate in 1828. phil. He was ordained by Koppel Bamberger in Mainz. After a time as rabbi assistant in his hometown of Worms, he became city rabbi of Gießen on October 1, 1829. From 1842 until his retirement on July 10, 1897, Levi was the Grand Ducal Hessian District Rabbi of the Province of Upper Hesse , based in Giessen.
Since 1853 Levi was a member of the Association of Jewish Scholars Abraham Geigers .
In his memory, the Jewish community in Giessen established the rabbis Dr. Levi Foundation as a poor foundation.
In 1832 Levi married Henriette Mayer (1806–1842) from Mannheim, daughter of the tobacco manufacturer Gottschalk Meyer and Rebecca Ladenburg . After their untimely death he married Gitel, called Jettchen, (1816-1845).
The composer Hermann Levi and the Mannheim bank director Wilhelm Lindeck were his sons. Wilhelm was baptized a Roman Catholic.
The estate of Benedikt Levi, which his family kept in Mannheim, was destroyed in the Second World War .
