The Warsaw Benedictine Monastery has been a priory of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament in Warsaw , Poland , since 1688 .

history

founding

Maria Kazimiera , the French wife of the Polish King John III. Sobieski , had vowed in 1683 before the Battle of the Kahlenberg to found a monastery in case of a happy outcome. In fulfillment of this promise, she turned to Mechtilde of the Blessed Sacrament , the founder of the Congregation of Benedictine Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (also: Sisters of Perpetual Adoration , the Sacrament Sisters or Sacramentine ). So in 1688 the Klasztor Benedykynek od Nieustajacej Adoracji (Benedictine Monastery of Perpetual Adoration) was founded in Warsaw , which still exists today ( Rynek Nowego Miasta 2 ) and houses around 25 sisters.

Building history

The monastery was created by converting an existing castle and building the Kasimir Church by the architect Tylman van Gameren . In 1740 a new monastery building was built according to the design of the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari , donated by the Radziwiłł family . In 1801, Louise-Adélaïde de Bourbon-Condé was dressed as a Benedictine here. In 1944 the church and monastery were completely destroyed in the Warsaw Uprising . 35 nuns died. After the war it was rebuilt.

The Polish Federation

In 1715 the Congregation founded another Polish monastery in Lemberg (today Ukraine ), which was moved to Silesia in 1946 and is now in Wroclaw . In 1959 a monastery was added in Siedlce . In 1962 the Polish Federation of Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration was founded.
