Benitochromis ufermanni is a species of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), which occursin the rivers of the Korup National Park in northwestern Cameroon and possibly also in its immediate vicinity.

features

Benitochromis ufermanni reaches a standard length of 8 to 10 cm, the females remain about a quarter smaller. The species has a moderately high back body whose height is 34 to 38.8% of the standard length. The head length is 34 to 38% of the standard length. The head profile is rounded. The tail stalk is usually higher than long or just a little longer than high. The caudal fin is rounded. Some rays of the dorsal and anal fin are slightly elongated in males.

Benitochromis ufermanni has a brown base color, the belly is lighter. Four to six vertical dark stripes pattern the sides of the body, are now and then, z. B. in stressful situations, overlaid by two horizontal stripes. The belly and sides of the body of mature females are yellowish to orange. Cheeks and gill covers are iridescent bluish, turquoise or light green. The lower lip is whitish to light blue. The dorsal fin and the upper part of the caudal fin have a red border. In females, the soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin and sometimes the upper third of the caudal fin is chrome-colored to whitish or yellowish. Males show numerous vertical rows of dark red dots on the caudal fin membrane.

Reproduction

Benitochromis shore manni is a mouthbrooders where the female eggs and young fish takes in the mouth. The male takes part in the guarding of the free swimming juvenile fish.
