Griveaux was initially a member of the Socialist Party and worked for Dominique Strauss-Kahn to 2007. He then became involved as a local in Chalon-sur-Saone before the Vice President Départemental of Saone-et-Loire was. From 2012 to 2014 he served in the cabinet of Health Minister Marisol Touraine before moving to the private sector until 2016.

He is considered a confidante of Emmanuel Macron and took part in the founding of his party La République en Marche (LREM). In March 2019, Griveaux resigned to run for Paris mayor in the 2020 local elections. Party comrade Cédric Villani also ran for the LREM , but Macron preferred Griveaux's candidacy. While this first achieved good results in opinion polls, its popularity fell in the context of the protests against the pension reform of the Macron government.

In February 2020, the Russian artist Pyotr Pavlensky distributed photos and videos of an intimate nature that Griveaux had sent to an acquaintance (and later Pawlensky’s partner) in May 2018. Pawlenski justified the dissemination with the fact that Griveaux alleged an intact family life and this "hypocrisy" had to be published. Griveaux then announced his withdrawal because a campaign was running against him and he was threatened. The police arrested Pavlensky and his girlfriend shortly afterwards; Griveaux had filed a complaint for violation of privacy.
