Benjamin Keach
Benjamin Keach (born February 29, 1640 in Hammond Stoke , Buckinghamshire , † July 18, 1704 in Horselydown , Southwark ) was an English Baptist evangelist, pastor, song poet and author.
Live and act
Keach came into contact with Baptists as a child and adopted their beliefs when he was 15. He was baptized by Johannes Russell and joined the Baptist church in his neighborhood. He began preaching at the age of 18 and worked as an evangelist in England for the next ten years. As a Baptist and thus a nonconformist, he also had to endure a lot of resistance, persecution, mortal danger and several times in prison. He stood before the public court in Aylesbury and later in Winslow on October 8 and 9, 1664 , for having written a catechism for children. He was sentenced to prison because the book did not conform to the dogmas of the Anglican Church .
In 1668, Keach settled in London and he pastored a church that met first in private homes and later in Horselydown, Southwark. Richard Baxter became one of his listeners and students, and John Tredwell of Lavingham, a pastor friend, defended him against William Burkitt, Rector of Dedham. During his time as pastor, more and more people joined this church, so it had to be expanded again and again, and he served it until his death. He was the first pastor to introduce, cultivate and cultivate congregational singing among the Baptists. Many of the English Baptist preachers of the time came to see him for advice. He was also the initiator of many Baptist meeting places in England.
