Benjamin Prichard's

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benjamin Prichard's is a liquor manufacturer from Kelso , Tennessee . The company, founded in 1997, produces rum and Tennessee whiskey and sells them in the USA and Europe. Although based in Lincoln County , Tennessee, Prichard's is the only manufacturer of Tennessee whiskey that does not go through the Lincoln County Process - since Tennessee whiskey was legally defined in 2013, Prichard's is also the only manufacturer with an exception to the law is allowed to manufacture. Since June 2014, Prichard's has been operating another microdistillery with a visitor center in Nashville , Tennessee.

history

Benjamin Prichard's owner, former dental technician Phil Prichard, started making rum from sorghum syrup at home in the 1990s . He got his first distribution through a former classmate who owns a liquor distributor and was encouraged to produce rum on a larger scale. Prichard was one of the first new rum manufacturers to co-found a craft movement for rum in the USA. In 1997 he founded Benjamin Prichard's. By 1999 he had bought his first pot stills and had moved into a former school building in Kelso to produce there. The school’s former gymnasium serves as a barrel store. By the end of the 2000s, he managed to set up sales for the USA and Europe.

The first whiskey that Prichard's made was the double barreled bourbon - Prichard bought bourbon in Kentucky at cask strength (about 60-65% alcohol), diluted it to drinking strength (about 40-45% alcohol) and then stored it again in bourbon - Barrels to round off the flavor. Prichard's launched this bourbon and a bourbon-based liqueur in 2009. Until 2011 Prichard's had a rye whiskey , a bourbon, a single malt, a corn whiskey and a Tennessee whiskey on offer.

In 2013, the state of Tennessee introduced a legal definition of Tennessee whiskey mainly due to lobbying by Jack Daniel’s maker Brown-Forman . Among other things, this stipulates that Tennessee Whiskey must go through the Lincoln County Process - a filtration through charcoal . Prichard's does not use these and he managed to get an exception written into the law for Prichard's only, so that he can still write Tennessee Whiskey on the labels. The relevant law provides for an exception to this rule for every distillery:

" Which is located in a county that by popular vote between January 1, 1979 and January 1, 1980 allowed whiskey production, as long as this distillery was licensed by the Alcoholic Beverage Commission between January 1, 2000 and January 1, 1980. January 2001. "

Since Prichard's is the only distillery in Tennessee to which these conditions apply and no other distillery can subsequently appear with which this is the case, this exception in the law only applies to Prichard's.

In June 2014 Prichard's opened a second base. He opened a micro-distillery and visitor center at The Fontanel Estate in Nashville , a large property with live shows, a hotel, galleries, and restaurants.

The brand is named after Phil's ancestor Benjamin Prichard, who also distilled whiskey in 1822.
