Bennachie , sometimes called Benachie , was a whiskey distillery near Insch , Aberdeenshire , Scotland .
The distillery was founded in 1824 by a pious farmer near the village of Insch as the Jericho Distillery and, over the years, was named after the nearby mountain Bennachie in the course of changes of ownership . Water from the Jordan stream , a tributary of the Urie that flows directly along the distillery's buildings, was used for mashing . Over the years the company changed hands several times. When Alfred Barnard visited the distillery as part of his whiskey trip in 1886, it had a coarse still ( wash still ) and a fine still ( spirit still ) and produced around 25,000 gallons of whiskey annually . At that time the company was expanded by the then owners, Callander & Graham, and its production capacity should be roughly doubled. In 1915 the distillery was closed. Several attempts to reopen the distillery failed. The name rights are currently held by United Brands , which is selling a blend of this name, which, however, has nothing to do with the historic distillery.
